Can Mindfulness Make Mothering Easier?

Updated: Sep 2, 2022

I love the above picture of grandmother, mother, and possible future mother because it looks so magical and fairy-dusted. My brain knows the mystical aspects of the photo are present because the online photographer is protecting his/her art, but my heart sings seeing the swirls of beautiful colors and weird shapes because motherhood is mystical. How do our bodies do that? Make a another whole human while inside us?! And for many of us, that’s the easy part. The actual mothering of that whole other human is a mixed bag. Mystical, yes… Weird, can be… But it’s also exhausting, exhilarating, frustrating, heartbreaking, satisfying and much, more. Mothering flings us to our highest highs and also plunges us to our lowest lows. It can take everything we’ve got, and then some.

Mindfulness is a great tool for helping us tune into the magical and mystical aspects of mothering. Miraculously, it can even assist us in doing so during the most challenging times and circumstances.

Although I’m incredibly thankful to have found, and begun practicing mindfulness, in midlife, I wish I had known about it when I was a young mother. While mindfulness has sweetened and simplified mothering my adult children, I know it would have made me a calmer, more peaceful, open hearted, and fun mom if I’d practice it when the kids were growing up. If you are a mom, or might some day, give yourself the gift of exploring mindfulness. With its simple practices and stories from many women, my book, The Mindful Woman, might be a great place to start. I wish I’d had access to

something like it when I was mothering 24/7!

Wishing you a magical, mystical, fun Mother’s Day.
