Recognizing Emotional Fallout

In reality, thoughts create feelings, and feelings create both internal and external consequences. It’s up to us to recognize which of our feelings are toxic and which are uplifting. With that awareness, we can mindfully and gently choose how to respond when feelings arise. Of course, we won’t always choose well, but reassuring and loving ourselves can usually help free us from emotional fallout.

  • After giving in to a strong feeling, assess its effect on your body, mind, and emotions.

  • If you are pleased with the aftereffects, give yourself a gold star.

  • If you are not pleased, love yourself through your disappointment and set an intention to respond differently next time around.
